SURREY – The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) will be holding community forums in Surrey and Toronto to facilitate dialogue on Canadian immigration issues including family reunification wait times, marriage fraud, foreign degree accreditation and refugee system reform.
The first of these events will be held on Sunday November 20th at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara’s Seniors Centre in Surrey BC from 1.30pm to 4pm.
Immigration has been the focus of considerable attention in the community after recent stories on alleged cases of marriage fraud as well as announcements by the federal government on steps being taken to improve family reunification wait times.
The townhall-type meetings being organized by WSO will be forums for community members to comment on important immigration issues as well as to hear from immigration experts. Invitations have also been extended to all three Canadian federal parties to send representatives.
WSO President Prem Singh Vinning said, “Canada is a land of immigrants and so immigration is always an important issue to Canadians. WSO will be hosting these forums to give the community an opportunity to discuss what is working well in the immigration system and what needs attention. We believe that facilitating a dialogue on issues like family reunification wait times and foreign degree accreditation is imperative and something the community is concerned about.”
