OTTAWA – On Wednesday, a Conservative government MP invited two witnesses to the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration from the Canadian Immigration Report, an organization associating itself with racists and hate groups.

“I am quite shocked that government members have asked this group to testify before us,” said NDP Immigration Critic Jinny Sims during a point of order. “These views don’t have any place at a parliamentary committee in one of the most diverse, open and accepting countries on earth.”

Among other things, the CIR website blames immigrants for a host of crimes, has a section called “Chinafication” and defends the ideology of the Nazis – National Socialism.

Sims pointed out the there is even an interview posted on the site with well-known Canadian white supremacist Paul Fromm, where he says:

“Certainly the policy in Canada is one of ethnic cleansing and replacement. By 2015, the European founding settler people will be a minority … we will have been ethnically cleansed out of our own country.”

“Normally I never object to a government witness – after all differences of opinion are healthy in a democracy,” said Sims. “But these views are inappropriate, highly offensive and hateful.”

During Question Period, Sims said the Conservatives defended calling the witnesses and that even a cursory look shows they should not have been invited.

“How did the Conservatives fail to do even basic due diligence?” Sims asked.
