MILWAUKEE -A  45-year-old Milwaukee man is accused of causing a five-car accident while driving drunk Monday on Mayfair Road, which left at least one other person injured.

Daljeet Singh was charged Friday in Milwaukee County Circuit Court with one count of third-offense operating while intoxicated, causing injury. If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 2:15 p.m. Monday, Wauwatosa police officers were called to the 1700 block of Mayfair Road for a multiple-vehicle accident. Singh was one of those involved in the accident, but he said he was unsure what happened.

None of the other drivers could say either – each just remembered being hit blindly.

But another driver who witnessed the incident said Singh had passed her going an estimated 70 to 80 mph and then collided in front of her with another car that was making a signaled lane change, causing the chain reaction. One driver was taken to Froedtert Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Singh admitted drinking a 24-ounce Heineken before driving. He could not perform field sobriety tests and had a blood alcohol level of 0.15, which is nearly twice the legal limit to drive in Wisconsin.

Singh was previously convicted of OWI in June 2011 and in 2008. He was ordered to serve 60 days in jail on the second conviction and his license was suspended for a year, after which he was to have been required to use an ignition interlock system for another year – but there was no interlock on the Pontiac Sunfire he was driving.

He will make his initial appearance in court Monday.
