NEW YORK – Gurpreet Singh Sarin, an Indo-American aspiring singer, happens to be the first Sikh on American Idol. He won the first round of auditions for the twelfth season of American Idol, which premiered on Jan. 16, reports Anju Kaur of Sikhnn.

“The reason I auditioned is because of my love and passion for music and singing,” said Gurpreet Singh. Singh sees this as an opportunity to “educate America and the world about Sikhism,” he told SikhNN. “People are taking notice about the religion and identity.”

The media from India, the United Kingdom and Canada has already noticed the talent of this 22-year-old college student from North Potomac, Maryland.

“It’s like a cohesive factor,” he said. “When people see someone represent them, it brings people together. It’s exciting, getting good feedback.”

Singh, who appeared to be a decent singer was successful in impressing the judges Nicky Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson with his nickname The Turbanator!

Singh had already established himself in the world of music as a proficient tabla player and classical singer. He and his family are well renowned in the Washington metropolitan area for singing Gurbani kirtan and playing several Indian classical instruments. Thus, his entry to the ‘American Idol’ will be an extra feather in his cap.
