The victim Gurpreet Gill, 33,went missing in 2006 from Vancouver and this week the police arrested her husband Jaswant Singh Gill after more than half a decade.
SOUTH VANCOUVER – Vancouver police arrested an Indo-Canadian man for the 2006 murder cold case in which he is accused of killing his wife.
The victim Gurpreet Gill, 33,went missing in 2006 from Vancouver and this week the police arrested her husband Jaswant Singh Gill after more than half a decade.
Gurpreet and Jaswant had an arranged marriage in 2000 and she came to Canada shortly there after.
Family members in India became concerned and alerted police after they didn’t hear from her for some time. Police believed she had met with foul play.
Just two weeks ago, the B.C. Coroners Service matched DNA from human remains found in Richmond to the victim’s family members.
Last Saturday, police arrested 40-year-old Jaswant Gill for his wife’s murder.
“Even though initially there were very few clues, our investigators never gave up,” said Vancouver Police Sgt. Kevin McLaren in a release.
“They believed they owed it to the family and the victim to stay on the case until it was solved. The missing persons unit worked very hard on it for some time until it became apparent that Gurpreet met with foul play.”
Police hasn’t released information on how she was killed, why it took so long to identify her remains, or where the body was found because the case is still being investigated.
Gurpreet’s brother told the media from Punjab that there were others involved in her death, accusing Jaswant Gill’s parents in the crime but the police said they have looked at other but there was not enough proof to charge others
Sgt. McLaren told reporters other suspects were investigated in the murder, but only Gill was charged.
All of the deceased’s family lives in India and the couple had no children, police said.
“We know that there is nothing that will ever make up for the tragedy and loss the family has suffered,” McLaren said. “But we hope that today’s announcement offers them some measure of comfort.”
Gill has been charged with the second-degree murder of his wife. He appeared in court Monday.
