SUVA – The Fiji Police Force has rejected international calls for an independent investigation into the brutal beating of two men in a video which has gone viral on websites.

A statement from the force released by the Ministry of Information said it was normal practice for any government around the world to conduct its own investigations into such matters.

The force said the same conventions apply in Fiji as in any other country dealing with allegations against the police, such as those taking place in Australia and South Africa.

The force said there would be no further statement until the investigation was complete and its findings released by government.

The statement said formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the video recording of Fijian security personnel and recaptured prison escapees was continuing.

The footage showed a group of men stomping on the pair and beating them with batons and pipes. A dog is also seen in the video dragging a man whose hands were tied.
