SURREY – The Surrey RCMP have been honoured for their commitment to diversity at a special ceremony held by the DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society.

The Cultural DIVERSEcity Awards recognize businesses and organizations that have excelled in successfully implementing culturally diverse initiatives into their workplace.

Surrey RCMP received recognition in the Public Institution category.

“We are honoured to receive this recognition,” says the Officer in Charge of Surrey Detachment, Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy. “We fully embrace the values of cultural diversity.”

“Surrey’s multicultural population is fast growing and ever changing. Policing a population where close to half the residents are from a visible minority has made it apparent that paying attention to cultural diversity is important when it comes to serving our community. We recognize, appreciate and celebrate the demographics of Surrey.”

Surrey RCMP employs 144 officers who speak a total of 27 different languages. The detachment also continues to have a presence and provides resources at many local community event celebrations such as the Vaisakhi Parade and Fusion Festival.

Other recipients included Key-West Asphalt Ltd. which was awarded in the “Business” category. Keywest Asphalt Ltd. (KWA) was incorporated by Raghbir Dhatt in 1996 with a handful of employees, and fewer pieces of equipment. Since its inception, Keywest has grown into one of the largest paving companies in the Lower Mainland employing almost 100 employees, and having an inventory consisting of bobcats, excavators, grinders, dump trucks and other equipment
