MUMBAI – Anurag Kashyap’s dream project Bombay Velvet was so far being produced by Viacom. But in a recent development the opus will now be co-produced by Fox Studios in partnership with Anurag’s Phantom Films.

Mumbai Mirror reports that Fox Studios sealed the deal at whopping Rs. 90 crore.

“Viacom had consistently backed Anurag’s film despite it being a big project. Anurag had plans to recreate Mumbai of the 40’s by erecting a huge set. However, during the closing stage of the discussion, the two sides ended up not being on the same page. The cost of production and the terms of profit sharing were the main concerns,” the tabloid quotes a source.

Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma-starrer is set in a Mumbai spanning 1950s through 1970s. It is a story about how the city evolved into a metropolis.

“We are delighted to partner with Anurag on his next directorial venture Bombay Velvet. What will make this cinematic journey unique will be the presence of Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma as the lead protagonists,” Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, India, said in a statement.

“We are looking forward to working together with Fox Star to create a phenomenal cinematic experience of this story for the big screen,” Vikas Bahl of Kashyap’s Phantom Films said.

Historian Gyan Prakash’s book Mumbai Fables forms the basis for the movie. Prakash has also worked on the script of the movie.

“Bombay Velvet is my first film in a trilogy about Bombay, before it became a Metropolis. It’s a story that has always fascinated me and we have been developing it for about four years, and I am very excited that now it’s fully ready and we begin shoot this year,” said Kashyap. He is currently at Cannes Film Festival.
