Apple Preparing 65-Inch TV For Release In 2014, Says Analyst

TOKYO – Apple Inc. will probably startselling ultra-high definition televisions with65- and 55-inch screens during the fourthquarter of next year, according to a Tokyobasedanalyst at Advanced Research JapanCo. The Cupertino, California-based companyis deciding on specifications, and themodels likely will have a frameless design,Masahiko Ishino, an analyst at AdvancedResearch, said in an interview on 18October. Ishino declined to identify thepeople who gave him the information.Takashi Takebayashi, a Tokyo-basedspokesman for Apple, didn’t immediatelyrespond to a telephone message seekingcomment.Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, before hedied in 2011, told his biographer he hadfinally cracked how to build a TV with asimple useri n t e r f a c ethat wouldwir elesslysynchronize content with Apple’s otherdevices. Chief executive officer Tim Cooksaid on 29 May that TV is an area of intensefocus for Apple as it seeks to add productsthat can build on the success of Macs,iPhones and iPads.LG Display Co., Samsung Electronics Co.Ltd and Corning Inc. may be among thesuppliers for Apple’s TVs, which may bepriced at about $1,500 to $2,500, Ishinosaid. LG Display may supply more than70% of the liquid-crystal displays, Samsungmay make graphic processing units andCorning’s Gorilla Glass 3 may be used asthe cover, he said.
