I, as a Royal Canadian NavyVeteran was shocked to see a billbeing tabled for vote in theQuebec Legislature, Canada lastweek that bans Sikhs from wearingtheir turbans, Muslims theirheadscarf called nijab, Jews theirKippah(skullcap), andChristians large crosses. In a country, such as Canada, which guarantees religious freedomin the constitution, this is adisgrace. I served 9 years in theRoyal Canadian Navy and wasthe first Sikh to wear a turban inthe Navy. This was approximately27 years ago now. I volunteeredto fight in the PersianGulf War. I did not put my lifeon the line for this country tonow have my right to religiousfreedom taken away from me.The constitution of the countryis a law above the governmentboth provincial and federal. Theconstitution is in place to protectthe citizens of the countryfrom its own governmentshould it violate rights we areentitled to. The constitution ofCanada guarantees everyCanadian the freedom of religion. The bill tabled in theQuebec legislature will requireall Sikh civil servants workingfor the Quebec provincial governmentto remove their turbansif they want to keep their job asa teacher, policeman, fireman, etc. We have faught hard inCanada for the right for Sikhs towear their turban in all aspectsof our life as required by ourreligion for baptized Sikhs. Wehave won the right to wear turbansin the RCMP, RoyalCanadian Navy, Royal CanadianAir Force, Canadian Army,Vancouver City Police, DeltaCity Police, Construction jobsites, motorcycle riders, and thelist goes on. Now we have anattempt to start to strip awaythese hard earned rights. I havespent an hour on this article andhave made myself 1 hour latefor work because the rights ofour Sikh community, theMuslim community, the Jewishcommunity and the Christiancommunity are worth it. I callupon all those who feel as I doto take time out of your busylives and sent a letter to yourMember of Parliament, Memberof your Provincial Government, your local newspaper andexpress your views as I have.Together we are like an unbreakablefist but on our own we arelike sticks easily broken in 2 myPunjabi mother used to tell melike all Punjabi mothers tell theirsons and daughters. TheConstitution of Canada whichover-rides the powers of all governmentsin Canada protectsour rights for religious freedom. My grandfather faught in WorldWar 2 in Italy in the BritishIndian Army to protect ourrights. My great grandfatherfaught in World War 1 inEurope in the British IndianArmy to protect our rights. Ispent 9 years in the RoyalCanadian Navy to protect ourrights. We all served with ourturbans on our heads. Four daysbefore Remembrance Dayremember this and take onehour out of your busy lives andhelp those whose rights areabout to be taken away fromthem in our own country in aprovince called Quebec.
