Funding Announced For Project To End Violence Against Women and Girls In Surrey

SURREY –Minister of Labourand Minister of Status ofWomen ,Dr. K. Kellie Leitchalong with MP Nina Grewalannounced Government ofCanada support for a project toaddress violence against womenand girls in Surrey and the surroundingFraser Valley area.“Our Government is committedto protecting women and girlsfrom violence,” said Leitch.“That is why we are holdingoffenders accountable for theiractions, and supporting community-based projects acrossCanada that address violenceagainst women.””Gender-based violence is a pervasiveissue that touches us all,”said Nina Grewal, Member ofParliament for Fleetwood-PortKells. “Through this project, theSurrey Women’s Centre Societyis providing effective, targeted,and community-based supportto address violence againstwomen and girls across theregion.”The Surrey Women’s CentreSociety is receiving $250,000from the Government ofCanada for a project that willimprove services for womenand girls who have experiencedphysical and sexual assault.Focusing on Surrey and the surroundingFraser Valley area, theSociety will work to improve thecoordination of medical, legaland social intervention for victims.
