Bhullar Led UFV Wrestling Team Slowly Beginning To Get Results

ABBOTSFORD – The ArjanBhullar and Raj Virdi ledUniversity of the Fraser Valleywrestling team was recentlyaccepted into the Canada Westfor the 2014-15 season. UFVwill now compete in the fiveteam conference which includes:the University of Alberta, theUniversity of Calgary, theUniversity of Saskatchewan, theUniversity of Regina, and theUniversity of Winnipeg.Bhullar, an accomplishedwrestler on the internationalscene who is now venturing intoMMA, said this is exciting newsfor the wrestling community inBC, since there hasn’t been aCIS wrestling team in theprovince since 2010 whenSimon Fraser University transitionedinto the NCAA.UFV Wrestling is currentlytraining as the Fraser ValleyCascades Wrestling Club inpreparation for next year’sCanada West/CIS debut. Theclub currently includes 12 menand 3 women, and has beguncompeting in numerous universitylevel tournaments. So far theclub is doing very well for a firstyear program, and we are hopingthe team will become a forceto be reckoned with for the2014-15 season.This season began in September2013. The first tournament ofthe year was the University ofCalgary “Dino Open” on Oct.25, 2013. Only four athletescompeted at the tournamentdue to numerous injuries acrossthe roster, yet the team earnedtwo medals, a silver and bronze.Amrit Sund also dropped a veryclose match in the bronze medalbout, earning himself fourthplace. Rookie Ajay Gill (84 kg)took a silver medal, losing a nailbiter in the finals against a formerjunior national champion.Out of our six athletes competingat this international tournament,two medalled and threefinished with a top 6 performance.Chanmit Phulka competedin the 130 kg weight class anddid not get a point scored onhim, winning all of his matchesto earn himself a gold medal.Jaskarn Ranu (72 kg) and AjayGill (90 kg) both earned silverand Dave Sharma bagged abronze in the 57 kg weight class.Both Ranjot Sandhar and RohitThandi placed top six in thehighly competitive Canada Westtournament. Hopefully by thistime next year we will be preparingfor a successful Canada Westcampaign, followed by a trip tothe CIS NationalChampionships.
