Russia scored a very impressive victory inthe 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.Russia led in both gold medals (13) andtotal medals (39). Russia moved from the11th position to the first position, ascompared to the previous WinterOlympics. The western countries made alot of noise about the possibility of a terroristattack. However, the Olympicscame to a peaceful and impressive end. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union,Russia led the Summer Olympics medalcounts most of the time. The SovietUnion was a sports superpower alongwith having an edge in overall militarystrength. However, after the collapse ofthe Soviet Union, the western countriesjeered at Russia and used every opportunityto humiliate Russia. The westerncountries used every chance they gainedto marginalize Russia. They wanted tosend a message to the world that theyhave once and for all finished Russia as asignificant player in world affairs. Theonly role they had planned for Russia wasthat of a fourth rate power which is completelydependent upon the West for itsmere survival.Putin changed all of that and started tobring Russia back to the place it rightlydeserves in the world. Russia’s historicvictory in Syria gave a loud and clearmessage to the world that Russia has succeededin claiming its rightful place in theworld. The western countries began conspiringon how to stop Russia from gainingany more influence and prestige inthe world and they waited to score a victoryto avenge their defeat in Syria. In their extreme desperation, the Westhas started supporting fanatics, radicals, and fascist forces throughout the world. In Ukraine, they incited their lackeys whoare complete sell-outs, traitors, and fascists. These forces have risked the devastationand destruction of Ukraine byinviting a Russian armed invasion. Theyare giving every reason to Russia torepeat its performance of Georgia in2008.The western countries took a big gambleby inciting their lackeys in Ukraine to goon the offensive while Russia was preoccupiedwith security concerns in theWinter Olympics as well as while Russiawas trying to regain its place in sports. However, as the Winter Olympics havesuccessfully concluded, Russia can focusupon the situation in Ukraine. The westerncountries are extremely nervous thattheir victory in Ukraine can easily turninto a very humiliating defeat. The westerncountries have left no choice forRussia except to invade Ukraine. Theyhave made it a do-or-die situation forRussia. If Russia does not act in Ukraine, its prestige and its dreams of gaining itsrightful place in the world will shatter. Adefeat in Ukraine will send a message inthe region that Russia does not have thewill or strength to act even on its bordersand in an area which has always beenconsidered within its sphere of influence. While Russia has a viable and probablythe only option of military intervention, the West for all practical purposes doesnot have an option to retaliate. The UShas just announced cutting back its militaryto Second World War levels andmany western European countries havealready significantly cut their militarybudgets and expenses. After the defeatsin Iraq and Afghanistan, the westerncountries are extremely reluctant to getinvolved in any way, leave alone a directmilitary confrontation with Russia, closeto the Russian border. Russia can easilyrepeat its winning performance of theWinter Olympics in Ukraine.Did the western countries take a gamble,or are they using Ukraine as a testingground to test Russia’s will and strength? The fact that the western countries arenow inciting religious fundamentalists, fanatics, and fascists only shows theirutter desperation to hold on to theircrumbling empire. However, these fundamentalists, fanatics, and fascists will beunable to reverse the course of history. There is writing on the wall. We do notneed any experts to read what is writtenbecause this is written in almost everylanguage which people can easily read:the East is rising and the West is declining. Why could not present rulers inUkraine read this? Most likely, they weretoo busy counting their dollars whichthey were receiving from abroad. The western countries can incite the fundamentalists, fanatics, fascists, and traitorsto come to power. However, theycannot sustain their victory. We saw thathappen in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia,Libya, and Egypt. Ukraine is going tojoin the long list of these failed “revolutions.”Putin has decided to put Russiasolidly with the East in the East-Westconfrontation. He has consistently chosenthe winning side. The course of victorydoes not travel in a straight line. Itscourse is more of a zigzag and spiral. However, in the end, the winner is decidedby the course and trend of history. Aslong as Russia remains firmly in theEastern camp, its victory is assured.By inciting religious fundamentalism, fanaticism, and neo-fascist forces, theWest is only going to prolong its ownmisery as well as the suffering of the restof the world. However, it will neitheralter the course of history nor change thepresent trends. The West should stop liftingstones like Ukraine which are likely tofall on its own feet.Dr. Sawraj Singh, MD F.I.C.S. is theChairman of the Washington State Networkfor Human Rights and Chairman of theCentral Washington Coalition for Social Justice.
