SURREY – A woman who has backed former MP Sukh Dhaliwal has been elected federal Liberal constituency president of the newly constituted Surrey-Newton riding, ensuring that Dhaliwal will be back running for the nomination of the riding which he won but lost in the last election to NDP’s Jinny Sims.

Dhaliwal is expected to face challenge for the nomination from a number of candidates including former BC Liberal MLA Gulzar Cheema. But so far no one has officially declared to run for the nomination yet!

In a press release sent out by Dhaliwal lieutenant Al Payne – the Organization Chair of the Surrey-Newton FLA, it stated that the membership selected Suki Dakha as their new President.

“Dakha has been a long time member of the Newton—North Delta team, participating on former Member of Parliament, Sukh Dhaliwal’s elections. She was previously the riding treasurer and has been recognized with the “Volunteer of the Year” award for the past three terms,” press release stated.

“I look forward to this new and exciting opportunity to build our team going into the next election”, Dakha said. “With our new leader Justin Trudeau, I have been sensing a high degree of enthusiasm in our community for the Liberal Party”.

The new riding is bounded by Scott Road to the west, 144 Street to the east, 88 Avenue in the north and Highway 10 to the south. It is comprised of portions of the former Newton-North Delta, Surrey-North and Fleetwood Port Kells ridings.

Sukh Dhaliwal, declared, “Our party is well positioned to win back the Surrey-Newton area. We will send more Liberals to Ottawa to represent our communities from all across this province in 2015 under our next Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau”.

Along with Suki Dakha, Saira Khan from the former Newton-North Delta riding and Jack Hundial from the Fleetwood Port Kells riding will serve as First and Second Vice President.

Dakha said, “I am pleased that our riding executive will be balanced with both men and women, as well as members from the many ethnic communities and neighbourhoods from the entire riding. I look forward to our first meeting where we can plan out our next steps to elect a Liberal Member of Parliament in 2015”.

She also announced that on Saturday, March 29, the new riding will be holding the Surrey Women’s Dialogue in conjunction with the Young Liberals of Canada as part of their “Women’s Connections” series.

The event will feature prominent female speakers from the community to speak to the International Women’s day theme: “Inspire Change”.  This networking luncheon will be held at the Grand Taj Banquet Hall at 11:00 AM.
