Canadian Race Relations Foundation Celebrates Inspirational Leaders

Recipients of the Community Champion Special Awards were AzizKhaki – presented posthumously and received by his wife, GulKhaki; Alan Lau, Rabbi Dr. Yosef Wosk and the Inter-Faith forWorld Peace Society. A special Award was presented to theMulticulturalism Policy Directorate of Citizenship andImmigration Canada, for “commitment, integrity and compassionin serving all Canadians”.

VANCOUVER – As part of atwo-day event entitled “BuildingBridges for Canada”, close to350 guests, representing thediverse cultural, ethnic and religiouscommunities of theGreater Vancouver area gatheredat the Riverside GrandBallroom in Richmond, BC yesterdayevening, to celebrate thework of the Canadian RaceRelations Foundation (CRRF),and the recipients of itsCommunity Champion SpecialAwards and the Award forLifetime Achievement. “The CRRF promotes a vision of society to which allCanadians feel they want tobelong, a vision which requiresthe good will of dedicated individuals,organizations and enterprisescommitted to celebratingthe richness and diversity of ourcountry”, said Albert Lo, said Albert Lo, Chairperson ofthe CRRF. “This evening’s honoureesrepresent the best ofthat ideal.”Recipients of the CommunityChampion Special Awards wereAziz Khaki – presented posthumouslyand received by his wife,Gul Khaki; Alan Lau, Rabbi Dr.Yosef Wosk and the Inter-Faithfor World Peace Society. A specialAward was presented to theMulticulturalism PolicyDirectorate of Citizenship andImmigration Canada, for “commitment,integrity and compassionin serving all Canadians”.Presented only three times in its11-year history, the CRRF’sAward for LifetimeAchievement was given toArthur K. Miki, CM, OM.Chief architect and negotiatorof the Japanese CanadianRedress Agreement whichacknowledged discriminatorytreatment of JapaneseCanadians interned during theSecond World War, Miki has, inaddition, had a distinguishedcareer as an educator, communityactivist and author. His lifelongdedication to the promotionof positive race relationsand human rights was recognizedby his receiving anHonourary Doctorate from theUniversity of Winnipeg, theOrder of Manitoba, and theOrder of Canada.
