MANILA –  – A NRI from Seechewal village was murdered in Philippines on Tuesday. The victim’s family has expressed apprehensions of some local Punjabis being behind the killing.

Ranjit Singh, 30, was living in Cebu city of Philippines and working as a moneylender. His brother Amrik said Ranjit was at work when he was gunned down. He said in December 2013, Ranjit was arrested by the authorities due to discrepancy in his immigration documents.

“Some friends and relatives got him released on bail in February and then helped him to start work again. He had married a Filipino woman and has two kids,” said Amrik.

Amrik said according to the information received from Philippines, a gang of Punjabis, who hail from Jagraon in Ludhiana district, were behind the killings in the island nation. He said it was said that a few Punjabis were indulging in kidnapping and ransom after getting information from the members of the community about their economic status and resources.

Over a week back, a youth from Sidhwan Dona village of Kapurthala district was also killed in Philippines.
