CALGARY – A Calgary woman who killed a young Indo-Canadian man and a passenger in her own car has been convicted of two counts of criminal negligence causing death and two counts of impaired driving causing death in connection to her role in a January 2012 crash.
On January 8, 2012, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Amie Nottebrock was behind the wheel of her Toyota Yaris when she sped through a red light at the intersection of Shaganappi Trail and Country Hills Blvd. N.W, reported CTV News.
The Yaris struck an oncoming Mercedes sedan.
The driver of the Mercedes, 20-year-old Arsh Brar, and a passenger in Nottebrock’s Yaris, 21-year-old Danni-Victoria Russell, were pronounced dead at the crash scene.
Nottebrock, who was 25 at the time of the crash, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
On Thursday afternoon, Amie Nottebrock was found guilty of all four charges.
“The criminal negligence is the most serious offence which is typically targeted for driving offenders,” explains Crown prosecutor Jonathan Hak. “It carries the highest penalty and is the most morally culpable driving offence.”
“The blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was between 220 and 270 mg per cent so, in the order of three times the legal limit, and she went through a red light at approximately 140 kilometres per hour. The speed limit at a red light is zero kilometres per hour.”
“The conduct she exhiibited that night is just mind numbingly criminal.”
The Calgary woman had posted bail following her arrest and will remain a free member of society until her sentencing, which is scheduled for September 26 at Court of Queen’s Bench.
