SURREY – People as diverse as former cabinet minister and history-making Indo-Canadian politician Moe Sihota, Surrey councillor-turned-Liberal MLA Marvin Hunt, star cop Kalwinder “Kal” Dosanjh, who may be looking at a political career down the road, and many young hip and happening people packed celebrity restaurateur Vikram Vij’s new South Surrey outlet My Shanti for upstart Surrey mayoral hopeful Barinder Rasode’s first of many big events as she builds momentum for her campaign.
“I wanted to bring together young professionals, because they are the future of Surrey,” Rasode said. “It’s time for fresh ideas and a new way of doing things. I think by engaging and empowering young people, who have so much passion and enthusiasm, we can truly build an incredible city together. The energy in the room was palpable and I’m excited for what the future holds.”
Sihota, who has known Rasode for a long time, told the LINK that he is fully backing her and hopes that she will make history as the first South Asian-Indo-Canadian mayor of a North American city.
“Barinder is a great candidate who has paid her dues and showed that she is a leader who can make a difference,” Sihota said.
Rasode said she’s very honoured Vij hosted an event for her, because this was the first time he shut down one of his restaurants for a private function.
In his speech to the crowd, Vij introduced Rasode as the next Mayor of Surrey and said the city is ready for her vision and leadership.
