Komagata Maru Departure Commemorated!

The Komagata Maru Heritage Foundation, led by Harbhajan Gill, organized a beautiful evening of speeches and tributes to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the departure of ship from Vancouver shores on July 23^rd 1914. The event at Bombay Banquet Hall was also held exactly 100 years from the night the ship departed on Wednesday, July 23, 2014! Richard Bird, grandson of Edward Bird, the lawyer representing the passengers of Komagata Maru 100 years ago and Hugh Johnston, a noted author and researcher on the subject, were among the many speakers who highlighted tragic event that remains a dark mark on Canada’s early history.
