The Sikh concept of free communal langar was brought to Canadian parliament this week as free food was served to people on the Hill as part of Sikh Awareness Day. Many MPs including NDP’s Jasbir Sandhu and Conservative minister Tim Uppal took part in the festivities.  “I would like to thank the many young Sikh volunteers from the Sikh Youth Foundation for their work to make this day possible,” said Uppal. Free Langar was distributed to all who attended, which Members of Parliament from all parties. “Langar” is the concept of “free kitchen” and is a regular practice in Sikh institutions of worship (Gurudwaras). Langar symbolizes equality of all as everyone sits on the floor together to eat a vegetarian meal regardless of one’s background or social standing.
