MESSAGE TO SOUTH ASIAN – INDO-CANADIAN COMMUNITY!

Don’t listen to people who say vote for this guy or that guy – in fact a good way to vote is to find out about each candidate yourself and then decide who really deserves your vote. And civic elections are unique in this way as you can vote for a different guy for mayor and even more choices for council and schools board.

By R. Paul Dhillon

What happened to former MP Gurmant Grewal and businessman Paul Brar this week after both were dismissed by Conservative party power players from seeking the nomination in Cloverdale-Langley City is clearly an abuse of the democratic process.

It is in fact party politics destroying the fundamental tenets which democracy is built on. Conservative party took thousands of dollars and members, signed by Grewal and Brar, from the Indo-Canadian community and then told the candidates to take a hike!

This is not only unfair but an insult of the democratic process.

This was an internal party battle and thus open to abuse but this can never happen in an actual election where the general population votes.

So don’t take this coming civic elections on November 15 around the lower mainland and across BC for granted as your VOTE really counts. And you can only make it count by going out to exercise your right to vote because it is the only way to keep abuse accountable and elect people who you can personally hold accountable.

The large Indo-Canadian-South Asian community in the lower mainland, especially in Surrey which has the largest population base of South Asians, can make a real difference by going out and voting for the candidate they feel is worthy of representing their city and community.

Don’t listen to people who say vote for this guy or that guy – in fact a good way to vote is to find out about each candidate yourself and then decide who really deserves your vote. And civic elections are unique in this way as you can vote for a different guy for mayor and even more choices for council and schools board.

And you can also just vote for only those people you want to see succeed, like you only want to vote for four people for council and mayor and one or two people for school board – you can do that as well.

It’s called strategic voting.

Only one mayor, eight council and six school trustees are going to win in Surrey so you can vote for your people in hopes that they make it to the top eight or six people in each category. Since there is only one person who will be mayor – you can only choose one!

The main thing is GO OUT AND VOTE!!!!

A Surrey letter writer Hanif A. Patel has this to say about voting:

November 15 is a decision day. With high expectation voters will put mark on ballots to choose right candidate for Mayor, councillors and school trusties.

It is our democratic right to exercise the franchise and elect correct leader who do public affairs effectively.

Many of us remain abstain from voting and seem less concern about election process but they do not know the real value of their vote and how one vote make difference?

Even though you do not vote, somebody will be elected. It is possible that winning leader is not suitable according to your desire than you do nothing but lost precious chance to select the leader.

Whether 40 % or 65 %  voters turn out to vote but result will represent for 100 %. The leader elected by minority will form government and make decision for majority.

Several key issues affecting on daily bases and shaping our future vigorously therefore everyone should cast vote.

To choose appropriate candidate through ballot paper is one of the vital part of free and fair democratic election function.

Let’s vote vigilantly and express opinion!
