PATIALA – The law and order in the city is rapidly deteriorating with over 400 theft cases having been registered in the past almost 10 months. It seems the police is not keen on cracking down on criminals. Sources confirmed the police was not regularly patrolling in the night even though Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had made it mandatory.

Over 54 theft cases, wherein goods worth Rs 50 lakh were stolen, have been registered at a police station in Tripuri. Similarly, 49 theft and snatching cases have been registered at Civil Lines police station. The scenario is no different in the inner part of the city with 27 and 23 theft cases registered at police stations of Lahori Gate and Kotwali.

“The number of cases registered paint a grim picture as there are hundreds of thefts that are not reported. Moreover, sometimes many theft cases are clubbed into one FIR. The situation has gotten worse as the police department is functioning poorly,” said a senior police officer.
