CHANDIGARH – The name of 1990-batch Punjab Police Service (PPS) officer Paramdeep Singh Sandhu is being sent by the Punjab Government for his promotion to the Indian Police Service (IPS).

Sandhu has been booked in several cases, including the infamous Moga sex scandal of 2008.

Sources in the Home department told media that Sandhu was among the 15-member panel sent to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for selection of five officers from the state police service to the IPS. This is the fourth time that Sandhu’s name has been recommended.

His name figured in the Moga sex scandal. He was also arrested by the CBI while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 in Mohali. He was once dismissed from his service in 1992, but was reinstated by the then Congress government.

Home Secretary Jagpal Singh said the name of Sandhu was sent because he was the senior-most PPS officer. “But certain certificates, like the integrity certificate, of the officer have not been signed or sent to the UPSC as a CBI case is pending against him. It is for the UPSC to examine all records and choose the best officers,” he said.

Other than Sandhu, the names of relatives of several politicians have also been sent. These include Sukhwant Singh Gill, a close relative of MLA Mahesh Inder Singh; Gurmeet Singh Chauhan, a close relative of two senior IAS officers; and Sukhminder Singh Mann, a close relative of former MLA Rajmohinder Singh Majithia.
