NAWANSHAHR – The state government started mining operations at its second state-run quarry at Burj Tehal Dass village here. The quarry is spread over 53 acres.

The move aimed at providing sand and gravel to residents at controlled rates. The government had earlier started mining at a site in Hoshiarpur.

Shakti Kumar Sharma, Chairman, Punjab Small Industries Export Corporation (PSIEC), flagged off sand tippers from the quarry. He said the state had handed over 40 sand quarries to the PSIEC in the first phase for supplying sand at cheaper rates to the public.

“Of these mines, the Central Government has given environment clearance for five quarries. Mining at more quarries is likely to begin soon after getting Centre’s nod,” he said. Mining sites in Moga and Ludhiana would be made operational in the next few days, he said.
