TORONTO – The Indo-Canadian owner of a rooming house in Etobicoke has been sentenced to three years in prison and will have to pay a fine in connection with fire that claimed one person’s life more than three years ago.
The landlord, Jasvir Singh, was found guilty of criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, and four counts of criminal mischief. He failed to follow proper fire code regulations at the home, according to a City of Toronto news release.
In addition to three years in prison, Singh has been ordered to pay $26,000 in restitution. He is also facing charges in the provincial court system for the fire code violations, reported CTV News Toronto.
The fire happened at a home on Humber College Boulevard, near Finch Avenue and Highway 27, on March 6, 2011. At the time, officials told CTV Toronto that the fire was sparked by a hot plate in a second-floor bedroom.
Five people escaped the fire, but 56-year-old Karnail Singh Dhaliwal was killed. Another person had to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns to his face and hands.
