CHANDIGARH – The NRI wing of the Punjab Police received 7,992 complaints this year so far. It had received 3,852 complaints last year.

Canada has topped the chart with 1,123 complaints, followed by the UK 763, US 744, Australia 282 and Italy 219. Of these, 2,245 complaints were received through e-mails.

While disposing of 6,842 (85.61 per cent) complaints, the NRI wing has registered 235 cases under various Acts.

“Look out circulars were been issued against 94 accused to get them arrested as soon as they land at any Indian airport. Besides, 75 proclaimed pffenders were arrested in different cases registered on the complaints of NRIs. Another 101 accused were declared POs,” said NRI wing head and IG Gurpreet Deo.

She said the steep increase in the number of complaints was due to an intensive campaign launched by the NRI wing to encourage sufferers to come forward to lodge a complaint online or personally.

A whopping 2,455 complaints were related to property disputes. After investigation, 64 cases were registered and a compromise was facilitated in 422 cases resulting in a benefit of Rs 100 crore to the aggrieved parties.

At least 664 complaints pertained to matrimonial issues and after an investigation, 73 cases were registered. Of these, 41 cases were relating to NRI bridegrooms deserting their Indian wives. The IG said the wing tried to redress complaints within 30 days of their submission.
