Policemen try to prevent them from committing self-immolation outside the office of the Commissioner of Police in Amritsar on Tuesday.

AMRITSAR – Accusing the police of registering cases against their husbands under pressure from the local Bar Association, two women attempted self-immolation outside the office of Police Commissioner here today.

Priya Kapoor and Kanishka Sarpal reached the office with bottles of kerosene and started pouring it over them. They were raising slogans against the police.

As they tried to light matchstick to set themselves on fire, policemen overpowered them. During this struggle, Priya fell unconscious and was rushed to a hospital from where she was discharged after medication.

Earlier, the police had booked 13 persons, including Saurabh Kapoor and Sunny Sarpal (husbands of these women), for injuring advocate Amit Sharma in a clash at a marriage function on December 3. Sharma had sustained head injury.

Later, the local Bar Association had launched protests to pressure the police to arrest all accused. The local Bar later requested the Bar Council to hold protest in other courts in Punjab to support the cause. Acceding to the request, the bar associations at various courts observed no work day today.

Priya Kapoor’s father-in-law Deepak Kapoor said, “My sSon Saurabh and his wife Priya had gone to attend a marriage party. Both of them were having food from the same plate. Priya started feeding Saurabh with her spoon. A tipsy person standing nearby passed an objectionable comment. When my son confronted him, the person and his advocate friend started talking to the girl in filthy language.”

After the initial scuffle, more advocates, including Amit Sharma, reached there. A fight ensued and Amit was injured. Deepak Kapoor complained that even as the MLR had stated that the injury was not grave, an attempt-to-murder case was registered. He said the police did not act on a complaint of sexual harassment and trespassing against the advocates.

When the family tried to take a legal course, no local lawyer accepted the brief.

Commissioner of Police Jatinder Singh Aulakh said, “The police has already removed Section 307 from the case. The case under Sections 323 and 324 still stands.”

About taking action for passing lewd remarks against a woman, Aulakh said the matter was being investigated and action would be taken. He said the department had taken serious cognisance of the incident and he had sought a detailed report from the officials concerned.
