Harinder Rattan, 42, was attacked in the street while on a trip to buy pudding for his wife and three children in Southall, England.

LONDON – The family of a father-of-three who was stabbed to death yards from his home paid tribute to a “loving and peaceful” man.

Harinder Rattan, 42, was found collapsed in the street with knife wounds after leaving his house in Southall to buy pudding for his young family.

The Sikh delivery driver, who volunteered at his local temple, died in hospital just over an hour later.

Three men who live on the same street as Rattan, including two brothers, have been charged with his murder.

His sister-in-law Sharon  Rattan said he was a “loving, hard-working Sikh” who dedicated himself to his wife and two daughters, aged 14 and seven, and son, aged nine. The trainee mechanic had also helped raise thousands of pounds to help fund a hospital named after his grandfather in the Indian state of Punjab.

On the night he was killed he left his home in Clarence Street, where he had been watching TV with his family, before going to buy custard and juice from a nearby shop.

He returned before realising he had forgotten to buy the custard and headed out again. His family became concerned when he did not come home and it was only when police arrived in the street that they learned he had been fatally stabbed.

Rattan was taken to hospital after paramedics battled to save him at the scene but was pronounced dead at 1.10am on Monday.

His sister-in-law, who works for an IT consultancy, said: “We are still in shock, we can’t believe this has happened. His mother and father are in a terrible state.

“He was a lovely man. He was loving and peaceful. He didn’t believe in violence. He did voluntary work and would go to the temple every week with his family who are very religious.

“He was just going out to get them dessert. He didn’t even take his phone. If he knew someone was after him he would have taken it. It is a tragedy. His three children adored him and will now grow up without a father.”

His death means his parents Surinder and Malkit, who live in Heston in Hounslow, have lost a second son, after  Harinder’s younger brother collapsed and died suddenly from a heart attack at home in 2011.

Rattan, who believed strongly in helping the poor, last visited the Bhagat Hari-Singh charitable hospital in Punjab four years ago. It was set up in 1999 by his grandfather.

He volunteered at the Sri Guru Singh Sabha gurdwara in Southall — the  largest Sikh temple outside of India — where his family worship.

Three men have appeared at Wimbledon magistrates’ court charged with murder and have been remanded in custody.
