SURREY – After numbers released by the Surrey RCMP showing that violent crime rates rose in Surrey last year, local NDP MPs Jinny Sims (Newton—North Delta) and Jasbir Sandhu (Surrey North) spoke out again, urging the Conservative government to take action.

“There has been a lot of Conservative talk in the past few days about safety, but not a single cent put towards more resources for police,” said Sims. “A year ago the provincial NDP proposed the Surrey Accord, a common-sense approach that would put more police on our streets.”

RCMP statistics indicate that violent crime in 2014 was up seven percent from the previous year, and property crimes rose 22 percent.

“Conservatives seem intent on ignoring Surrey,” said Sandhu.  “We’ve long been advocating for more funding to hire RCMP officers, but there have been no results. Surrey is BC’s second largest city, and families here deserve attention and action from this government.”
