Eighth Annual International Punjabi Cultural Mela To Be Dedicated To Jagdev Singh Jassowal’s Memory

AMRITSAR – The eighth Desh Bhagat Comrade Ujagar Singh Yaadgari Mela at village Khatrai Kalan, District Amritsar, Punjab, on February 19, 2015, will be dedicated to the memory of Jagdev Singh Jassowal. This was announced by Dr. Sawraj Singh, Convener of the Sarb Sanjha Vichar Manch, which is a co-sponsor of the event.

Dr. Sawraj Singh, while addressing a press conference at Patiala, said that Jassowal was the Patriarch (Baba Boharh) of Punjabi culture. Dr. Singh said that Patiala is the hub of Punjabi culture and we are proud to make this announcement here. He said that this Mela is unique because along with entertainment, there is an effort to raise peoples’ awareness about the challenges faced by Punjab and Punjabi culture because of the western cultural invasion. We also intend to combat vulgarity in Punjabi singing since this has become a very serious problem in Punjab. He said that while there was no harm in adopting good elements from any culture and retaining the healthy trends in our culture, yet unfortunately the converse is happening.

Also present were Dilbagh Singh, grandson of Comrade Ujagar Singh; Gurdip Singh, A.I.G. of Punjab Police Patiala, who will inaugurate the Mela; Seth Sham Lal Navyug, a philanthropist; and Pran Sabharwal, Director of NTAS [ National Theatre and Arts Society]  .
