Poetry Night In Punjabi and Hindi

Tuesday, March 17, 6:30 – 8:00 pm

George Mackie Library, in collaboration with Kendri Punjabi Lekhak Sabha, Uttari Amrika and Punjabi Lekhak Manch – Vancouver, offers poetry night in Punjabi and Hindi. Come hear two published poets/authors read and discuss their work and answer questions from the audience.

Are you a newcomer to Canada who needs help adjusting to your new life?  Free and confidential services are offered to help newcomers – with all their needs – during the process of settling into their new community.  Settlement and Integration Services are free for immigrants, refugees and their families in BC*.  Offered in partnership with PICS.  *Valid Permanent Resident (PR) card should be presented at the time of service.  Canadian Citizens and Temporary Foreign Workers will be referred to Options Settlement Service Office.

PICS Launches KIDS CLUB

Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society announced the launch of its new program: PICS Kids Club. PICS Kids Club is for students in grade k-12 who need a little extra help with their school work and studies. The tutoring sessions are $20/hour and they run every Wednesday between 3:30pm to 5:30pm at PICS Society head office, 205-12725 80th Ave, Surrey, BC. Income Tax Clinic

Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society is proud to announce that they will be establishing PICS Income Tax Clinic this year from the last week of February 2015 to April 2015 in partnership with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Clinic Program of Canada Revenue Agency. This program will engage PICS volunteers who have been trained by Canada Revenue Agency to help community members who have low incomes to electronically file their income tax returns. To be eligible to avail this free service:

•           Your income must be as follows:

o          Single Person: $30,000 or less

o          Single parent with child: $35,000 or less

o          Each additional child: $ 2,500

o          Couples: $40,000 or less

o          Investment income under: $ 1,000

•           You have a simple tax return (no self-employment, no bankruptcy, no forms for deceased, no capital gains/losses and no rental income).

•           You must attend in person.

Child Care Meeting

The issue of child care is one that is always on the minds of parents in our city. A CCPA report in November showing that families in Surrey are paying the highest prices in the province highlights the issues of availability and cost. MP Jinny Sims will be holding a discussion about the issue of child care with interested community members.

Child care providers in our city do a wonderful job of keeping children safe, educating them and providing an important service. They have been invited, along with parents and interested community member, to take part in this discussion on child care.

Enbridge Town Hall Meeting

MP Nathan Cullen will join local MP Jinny Sims in Surrey next week as part of the Take Back our Coast campaign. He has been working to oppose the Enbridge pipeline and to protect BC’s coastal environment. As part of this campaign, MP Cullen has written Bill C-628, An Act to Defend the Pacific Northwest. He will be presenting this bill along with the work he has done to protect the North Coast of BC.
