JALANDHAR – At least 12 houses collapsed at Pandori village near Nakodar due to high-velocity winds that lashed the region.

No causality was reported, but a 65-year-old woman sustained serious injuries. Members of the Pendu Mazdoor Union led the rescue operations.

The incident took place around 12.30 pm in a Dalit colony in the village. Houses of Kartara Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Surinder Pal, Swaran Singh, Satpal, Kinder Pal, Gurmeet Chand, Bachan Singh, Banti, Tirath and Mohan Lal were completely damaged.

“All family members were sitting outside the house while my wife Amar Kaur was inside when I heard a loud noise. Our house collapsed. We were able to rescue my wife after an hour-long operation,” Kartara Singh said. Another victim Tirath Singh said the storm demolished their three-bedroom house. “A major tragedy was averted as my children had gone to school,” he said.

Pendu Mazdur Union representative Tarsem Peter said union members carried out the rescue operations. He rued that no one from the district administration visited the site even as several people had been rendered homeless.
