On Friday, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team announced that Surjit Dosanjh, who is the father of victim Elaine Leznoff’s 13-year-old son Kalvin Leznoff who is fighting for his life after being critically injured in the fire, has been charged with second-degree murder.

RICHMOND – An Indo-Canadian man is charged with killing his estranged Caucasian mother-in-law, a retired educational assistant , who was killed in a Richmond house fire earlier this week.

Elaine Leznoff, 66, did not survive the quick-moving blaze and Dosanjh’s son Kalvin Leznoff is not expected to live.

Since being remanded into custody, Dosanjh has “been to court on other matters,” police said, although it wasn’t specified what he was appearing for.

IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Stephanie Ashton said Dosanjh has been estranged from the family since earlier in the month and was not living at the Cornerbrook Crescent home when it went up in flames.

An online fundraiser has been started to help support Liane Leznoff, the boy’s mother and Elaine’s daughter, reported CTV news.

“She still has two she needs to care for and I know it can be expensive, especially after a fire. And she lost her mom, who was a big source of support for her,” said family friend Jordana Dobson.

“The Leznoff family are grateful for the support they have received from the public and their friends.  They are asking that they be allowed to grieve in private.” Sgt. Ashton.

Elaine Leznoff worked as an education assistant at McNair Secondary School in Richmond, and had retired just last year.

“She was a special person and that kind of work she did requires that specialness and empathy and she had that in spades,” said Richmond School District Superintendent Monica Pamer.

“It’s just devastating news.”

Dosanjh made his first court appearance in Richmond Friday.
