SURREY – Surrey’s so-called gang turf war between alleged South Asian and Somali criminals netted a high profile victim in Arun Bains, the nephew of NDP MLA Harry Bains.

Arun Bains was gunned down in Surrey early last Sunday with police calling him a gang member, someone known to the police, while his family claimed their son was not a criminal or linked to gangs in any way.

“Arun was not a criminal. He was not a gang member. He was loved by everyone who knew him,” the family said in a press release. “Arun was a fine young man who loved his family and had a bright future ahead of him. This is an extraordinarily painful time. Arun was the heart of our family. We are still trying to accept the reality that our son, brother, cousin, and nephew is gone.”

Bains was rushed to hospital just before 3 a.m. Sunday, April 19, after being shot near 126 Street and 88 Avenue. He died from his injuries at hospital.

In our front page story last week, the LINK had warned that if the police did not bud this criminal gang war in the bud that it was going to lead to someone being killed and that is exactly what happened with Bains’ killing.

“First of all, let me thank everyone who reached out to our family with your love and best wishes,” said Harry Bains in a press release issued Thursday after remaining silent on his nephew’s murder.

“I want to extend a special thanks to the parents who have also lost children to violence. Your visits have given us the courage to go on. At this point, we know very little about what happened. We are meeting regularly with the RCMP and we urge anyone with any information about this or any crime to come forward. Justice for Arun will not bring him back to us, but it may spare another family the immense pain we are feeling.

“I have been an advocate for my community against crime for a long time. I will continue that work, but today I feel we must put a far greater emphasis on prevention. We need to support parents and teachers in early and effective interventions when a young person is following the wrong path.

RCMP has to be aggressive in fighting the gangsters and they need to employ a strategy similar to Vancouver Police Department, which aggressively arrested the city’s gangsters and other troublemakers ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Bains’ death is believed to be linked to a series of brazen street shootings involving rival drug dealers that has plagued Surrey and Delta in recent weeks.

Police said last week the violence was linked to two groups of young feuding drug dealers in the South Asian and Somalian communities, most of whom have not been cooperative with investigators.

A dark-coloured, four-door Mazda 3 riddled with bullet holes – believed to be the vehicle Bains was in – remained at the shooting scene Sunday.

The deadly shooting was another in a string of about two dozen gun incidents in Surrey and North Delta in the past month and a half.

Surrey RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr said investigators “now more than ever” need tips from those who have information about the shootings. “We need you to come forward with any little bit of information you may have before another young person in killed,” he said.

“Our deep concern now is there may be a retaliation incident,” Carr said. “We are appealing to those involved in this ongoing dispute to not take any more lives and to understand that this is more than gunplay, it’s murder.”
