VANCOUVER – Major Suranjan Das, who was born in a remote farming village in Bangladesh in 1951, is proud to call Canada his home and it has given him the greatest gift – a truly blessed family of high achieving children.

Das, who is now retired, completed his education in Bangladesh, graduating BA in History from Chittagong University. As an undergraduate student in 1971, he joined the Liberation War and fought against the Pakistani Army.

After liberation, he joined the Bangladesh Army and rose to the rank of Major. He was trained by the US Army at the Transportation and Aviation Logistics School in Fort Eustis, Virginia. As a Captain, he met his wife Suparna Das and they married in 1979.

They were blessed with four children. The eldest daughter, Dr. Sharmistha Das, MD, FRCP(C), currently works as an Internal Medicine specialist at Vancouver General Hospital. She is married to Dr. Naveen Singh Sandhu, MD, FRCP(C), who is also an Internal Medicine specialist at Lions Gate Hospital.

The second eldest daughter, Shawan Das, Juris Doctor, is a practicing lawyer in BC. She is married to Vardip Singh Sandhu.

The son, Dr. Siddhartha Das, MD, is currently completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of British Columbia.

The youngest daughter, Samarpita Das, is due to attend medical school at the University of British Columbia this fall.

All four children attended high school at South Vancouver’s John Oliver Secondary School from 1994. Mrs. Das undertook the burden of raising the children as Major Das worked multiple odd jobs to support the family.

Mrs. Das has been a Canadian Air Transport Security Authority employee at Vancouver International Airport since arrival to Vancouver and Major Das is semi-retired.
