SURREY – Police in Surrey has finally woken up to the rising crime in Surrey by making hundreds of arrests and laying charges.

With more than 40 shootings in the Surrey-Delta area, public has been critical of the police with many questions about how police have been handling recent violence, but new stats show that they are taking action and getting gangsters and criminals off the street.

Stats show police have made 514 arrests in Surrey and Delta since April, with 146 charges laid.

“It will make a difference,” says Sergeant Lindsey Houghton with the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit. “There’s no question that what we’ve done is something that needed to be done in response to what these people were choosing to do.”

Beyond that, and police have seized 76 weapons, a dozen of which were guns, and have also carried out 4,500 traffic stops.

“It’s extremely challenging,” says Houghton of tracking down those suspected of involvement in recent gun violence. “You have sometimes dozens of people involved or potentially involved in a conflict of this kind, driving around sometimes trying to evade detection and evade being stopped.”

Enforcement is just one part of the solution, says Houghton, stating prevention efforts with vulnerable youth will remain a priority, reported News 1130.

More bad news for Surrey as Surrey RCMP say at least eight drug overdoses took place in the city over 24 hours this week.

Investigators say the victims were apparently ingesting heroin and immediately showed signs of overdose.

In at least three instances, “extreme life-saving measures” had to take place.

All victims were taken to hospitals and are recovering.

It is not clear what the nature of the drug is, so police are not able to confirm what has caused the overdoses, but investigators say the users were purchasing what they thought was heroin.
