TORONTO – A Toronto homicide detective says police believe a 22-year-old Indo-Canadian man was slain in a townhouse and his body taken to a rural area 200 kilometres from the city and encased in concrete.

Det. Dave Dickinson said Shawn Kapadia, of Mississauga, was likely killed on July 5 at Unit 118 of a townhouse complex at 7 Foundry Ave., near Davenport Road and Landsdowne Avenue. Dickinson said investigators believe Kapadia’s body was then moved from Toronto to a home on O’Reilly’s Road South in Wainfleet, Ont., about a two-hour drive from the city, reported CBC news.

An older model John Deere backhoe was seen at the Wainfleet home and later observed leaving with a large chunk of concrete in its front bucket. Police said the backhoe was last seen driving on Broadway Avenue in Welland, Ont., on the afternoon of July 12.

“It is likely that this backhoe was borrowed or taken without consent,” Dickinson said.

Police haven’t been able to locate the concrete slab, and are asking for the public’s help in looking for it.

Forensics officers, meanwhile, spent more than 24 hours searching the Wainfleet home.

Dickinson said there have been no arrests in the case so far, though he said the case is progressing quickly.

“I do anticipate them in the future,” he said.

Kapadia was reported missing to Peel Regional Police by his parents on July 10. Five days later, police put out a news release about his disappearance.

On the morning of Sunday, July 12, Toronto police were called to the Foundry Avenue townhouse complex regarding a trespasser, which set the investigation into Kapadia’s disappearance in motion.

Police found blood inside the townhouse, as well as a footprint beside the door, evidence that’s still visible today.

Dickinson said Kapadia is known to police, though wouldn’t elaborate on the man’s background. He said Kapadia had an association with the Foundry Avenue address.

Police launched an investigation at that location, but released few details about what they were looking for at the time, leaving many neighbours concerned.

Dickinson said evidence recovered at that location led them to the Wainfleet home, where Kapadia’s Pontiac G6 car was found.

Police are calling Kapadia Toronto’s 27th homicide victim.
