CHANDIGARH – Seven months after Babbar Khalsa terrorist Jagtar Singh Tara, a proclaimed offender in the Beant Singh assassination case, was arrested from Thailand, the court has directed the CBI to produce the record in the 19-year-old case on August 20.

The court has also written to the Burail jail officials to produce Tara through video conferencing on that day.

Tara was arrested in January, 11 years after his escape in 2004 from the high-security Burail jail. The move to initiate trial in the Beant Singh assassination case against Tara follows a request by Burail jail authorities who had first written to the court to initiate the trial following his arrest.

The court had issued a notice to the CBI. The CBI filed a reply on August 3 following which the court has summoned the record in the case and written to the Burail jail authorities to produce Tara through video conferencing on August 20.

Tara’s trial will have to be conducted in the Burial jail itself in the wake of the notification under the 268 Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) prohibiting transportation of Tara from the Burail jail. This implies that till the time his trial is not complete, he cannot be moved out of the jail.

Tara faces the charges of murder and conspiracy for assassinating Beant Singh and conspiracy charge in the Burail jail break. He was arrested in 1996 for killing the then CM and 12 members of his staff by a human bomb.

When Tara had escaped from the jail, the trial was already on in the CM assassination case. He was facing charges of murder and conspiracy for assassination and about 60 witnesses had already been examined. Tara will also face trial in the Burail jailbreak case in which the police will file a separate chargesheet against him.
