SURREY – Ken Hardie, the Liberal candidate in the Surrey riding of Fleetwood-Port Kells, was caught with his pants down in spreading false rumours on twitter Tuesday against his Conservative opponent Nina Grewal, saying that party leader Stephen Harper, who was in town, would announce by noon Tuesday that Grewal was being replaced with BC Liberal leadership loser Kevin Falcon.

“Hot Rumour,” tweeted Hardie. “Nina Grewal is out as a Conservative candidate in Fleetwood-Port Kells. Kevin Falcon is in. Stephen Harper to announce at noon.”

The only problem was that it wasn’t April Fool’s day and Hardie was the joke of the town, along with those who were spreading his lies, as Grewal had long been confirmed as the candidate in the riding in the party given that she has held the seat since 2004.

No doubt that Grewal is in tough this time out with former RCMP inspector Gary Begg challenging her with significant Indo-Canadian support and money behind him but according to her campaign sources, she has always fought hard for the party to win the seat and this time will be no exception despite the challenge of a name-worthy candidate like Begg.

Grewal was busy door knocking Thursday but the LINK spoke with her husband and former MP Gurmant Grewal, who confirmed that his wife is in fact the candidate and the party is 100 percent behind her candidacy as she has worked hard for the since she was first elected in 2004.

“I don’t understand why her political opponents are spreading these false rumours but we are just going to take it as a blessing since it gives her a platform to address the work she has been doing for the riding,” Gurmant Grewal said.

Twitter, and even facebook with some Indo-Canadian media out lets and even Punjabi journalists picking up the false rumour, were lit up by the false rumour which turned into news Tuesday morning that Nine Grewal was going to resign her seat, all this from her opponent Hardie, who claimed that independent sources had told him that she was being replaced by Falcon.

But the so-called announcement never materialized and Falcon was quick to respond, telling The Province newspaper in an email: “I won’t be running for any party.”
