Surrey Girls Are Going For Gold At Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships In India

SURREY – Two Indo-Canadian weightlifters Jeenat Billen and Snimerdeep Sanghera are representing Canada at the upcoming Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship being held at Pune, India. India is hosting youth, Junior and Senior Commonwealth weightlifting championship from October 11 to 16.

Head coach Makhan Sandhu, who heads the Lions Weightlifting club, is travelin with these athletes. He told the link that three girls from Lions Weightlifting club qualified to represent the Canadian team but Prabdeep Sanghera is not going.

He said although it was certain that Prabdeep would have won the medal in Commonwealth, but she was not sent because she is going to participate in World Weightlifting Championship in November as that competition is more important for Canada because it is a qualifier for 2016 Olympics for the Canadian team.

In 2013, Prabdeep won gold in Junior and Silver medal in Senior Commonwealth at Malaysia.

Jeenat Billen also won Silver medal in 2013 in youth Commonwealth.

Sandhu is very hopeful of winning medal from both of these athletes. He thanked Bob Cheema from Bill Investment who paid for the air tickets of these girls.

He also thanked Piara Singh Bhullar for contributing to pay for the accommodation during the stay at hotel in Pune.

Without the help of such sponsor, it is very difficult for the parents to send their kids in National and International tournaments.
