VANCOUVER – While the scheduled improv comedy team from Mumbai, India called Bollywood Improv are no longer on the card at Vancouver TheatreSports League’s 28th annual TheatreSports™ Festival, The Massacre, goes on starting at The Improv Centre stage on Granville Island from February 9 through February 14.

“This festival is one of our best-attended events of the year. There is nothing like a little healthy competition to bring out the best in improv comedy and the winner gets bragging rights for a year!” comments VTSL Executive Director, Jay Ono.

The first two weeks (January 27 – February 6) sees your favourite VTSL improvisers square off in head-to-head round robin sets to determine who will be the best of the best. Will Margret Nyfors garner more laughs than Ken Lawson?

Will the audience show some love to Graeme Duffy or will Denise Jones be the ‘shining star’ of the festival? All this and more will be decided by the audience as they determine the action through their suggestions and root for their favourite performers. While no one can predict the outcome, one thing is for certain – you’ll leave in a happier mood from having laughed so much.

The final week (February 9 – 14) is given over to international teams from as far afield as: Mumbai, India; Orlando, Florida; Austin, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; and Bellingham, Washington, featuring mixed play and individual city showcases in select time slots.

Audiences were to sample Team Mumbai’s showcase send-up of Bollywood movies but they had to cancel due to scheduling but Austin will amaze you with its lightning-fast draws, er, ripostes.

Last year’s international winner Team Bellingham returns to defend its crown while Team Atlanta will do its very best to snatch it away. It all adds up to more than enough fun to chase away the winter blues.

The Neil Macrae Bar & Lounge, tucked in the back of The Improv Centre, has concocted two special cocktails in keeping with the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (which is where The Massacre originally took its name).

Capone’s Kiss with Amaretto, Melon, and a touch of ‘blood red’ cranberry juice

Holy Trinity with Baileys Irish Cream, Jameson Irish Whiskey, and Crème de Menthe

Both are available to theatre patrons for $8 and will be served only during the three-week run of The Massacre.

The Massacre runs from February 9 through February 14, 2016, at The Improv Centre on Granville Island. Tickets, starting as low as $10/student and senior or $15/adult, are on sale now at vtsl.com.
