MONTREAL – A 23-year-old South Asian man has been sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for ten years for killing a 19-year-old Dawson College student in 2012.

Abiram Subramaniam stabbed Joshua Williams to death behind Plaza Cote des Neiges as the teenager was trying to break up a fight between two friends arguing over a ring, reported CTV Montreal.

Subramaniam was found guilty of second-degree murder last January.

Superior Court Justice Marc-André Blanchard determined Monday that Subramaniam would serve a life sentence, but will be able to apply for parole after serving the minimum of ten years.

It was a bittersweet day for Williams’s mother, Jeannine James.

“I do have my own personal conflicts, but the law, I concede to the law and I’m very happy that the law worked for us in this case. It came to a point where it gives us a lot of peace,” she said, adding that the pain isn’t going away despite the sentence.

“It’s a life sentence, anyway. We don’t have parole, I don’t have parole but that’s the way it works.”

The prosecution argued Subramaniam should serve a minimum of 13 years, adding that in a confession he made to undercover officers passing themselves off as gangsters, the accused behaved like a hardened criminal.

Blanchard ruled that it would be up to the parole board to decide if and when Subramaniam is ready to be released.

Subramaniam’s lawyer Josiane Michel is appealing his conviction.

“We were waiting for the judgment of the sentence today but we’re still on appeal, yes,” said Michel.

Subramaniam’s rehabilitation is off to a rocky start: He was recently convicted of assaulting a prison guard.
