SURREY – As usual, ‘Vaisakhi-2016’ was celebrated by a huge gathering of the mosaic of Canadians and a flood of turbaned Sikhs in Surrey, BC with full fervor by wearing colorful dresses. On the day of Vaisakhi in 1699, the Sikhs took the vow that they will always wear five Kakars, the articles of the Sikh faith. They will neither cut their hair and nor will they remove the Kirpan from their person. They will not use intoxicants and will stay away from adultery. These integral and indispensable articles are still fragrant and constantly remind the commitment of the followers to stand for universal principles of justice, equality, peace and global prosperity.

An octogenarian, and eminent drug therapist Raghbir Singh Bains was seen actively moving on foot around the city roads as usual, holding anti drug placards, distributing fliers, contacting and addressing young boys, girls, their parents, social activists, business people, security forces and socio-religious groups to clean the society of the appalling hazards of the killing drugs /social evils prevalent in the society. For decades together, Dr Bains is creating awareness on the evil effects of alcohol, drugs, domestic violence, bullying, flesh trading, murders, drug trafficking, female foeticide and HIV AIDS etc.  It is his lifetime commitment to help the misled youth.

Bains was cheerfully received and welcomed by individuals and many sections of the public at large including the groups of teens and young students who took keen interest in the campaign for cleaning the society of the menace of drugs that are spreading the social evils.

Many youngsters promised the crusader to take part in such events to create awareness about the deadly disease, disaster and menace which has reached historically high levels in the society.

It is reiterated here that the menace of social evils like drugs, domestic violence, murders, adultery, foeticide, jealousy and hatred on account of caste, colour, creed and region of a person are forbidden and socially unacceptable in Sikh annals and other religions. However the Sikhs are particularly required not to get into the evils of alcohol, drugs and other tribulations.

When contacted, Dr Bains says that drug addiction comes with a huge price tag. The more drugs you want, the more money you need to pay for the compulsive urge. Drugs are pricey and individuals often don’t have sufficient money to support their addiction. The users often turn to crimes or high risk behaviours. A bad trip to the world of drugs can haunt you for the rest of your life. Flashbacks can occur at anytime. Many a times the addicts go very close to death bed. So stay away from drug perils to enjoy maximum of your life. Addiction is a brain disease where there are chemical changes in the brain, and that is why it is so hard to give up these substances. With alcohol addiction, there usually is a family history of addiction. Alcoholism is sometimes more of a hereditary disease, not a disgrace. Bains further says that drug addiction is a disease which needs treatment. However most of the world religions do not permit use or abuse of drugs as being a moral taboo.

Bains appealed to the government, law enforcement forces and public at large to give priority to end the dangerous trend of drugs. We together must deal with ever increasing supply and demand of drugs. Borders must be sealed against drug entry.

Recent studies have shown that repeated drug use leads to long-lasting changes in the brain that undermine voluntary control. However the best treatment is self prevention.

Bains further reiterates that for bright future of our progeny, we must clean the society and stay away from the drug menace. He appealed the parents not to put the dirt underneath the carpet but to get treatment for their loved ones so that they work for global peace, prosperity and wellbeing of the entire human race.
