FEROZEPUR – Unable to cope with financial stress, another farmer belonging to this border district allegedly committed suicide last evening. The deceased has been identified as Banta Singh (72) of Tarran Wali village in Mamdot block.

Sources said the victim was under heavy debt. He owned just 2.5 acres of land and was unable to make both ends meet. Balbir Singh, his younger brother, said Banta ended his life by consuming poison.

Jaswant Singh Bhatti, SHO, Mamdot police station, said the victim’s family members did not bring the matter to their notice at the time of the incident. “We are recording their statements following which a case will be lodged,” he added.

Gurpreet Singh, a nephew of Banta Singh, said since the weather was not good, the family decided to cremate the body late this evening.

Sandip Singh Garha, SDM, Ferozepur, said the matter came to his notice. “We will check all aspects that forced Banta Singh to commit suicide,” he said.

Last week, Surjit Singh (65) of Balewala village committed suicide by jumping into the Sirhind Feeder canal. His body was recovered from Bhagthal Kalan village in Faridkot district.

Earlier on April 30, Surjit Singh (65) of Waryam Singh Wala village under Mamdot block committed suicide while Major Singh (62) of Shehjada Sant Singh village in Zira subdivision ended his life owing to financial burden. In January, a farmer identified as Harbans Singh (60) of Karma village committed suicide due to similar circumstances.
