SURREY – A charge of aggravated assault has been upgraded to manslaughter for an Indo-Canadian man from Surrey, who is accused of killing a family member after an argument went too far and resulted in the death of one of the members.

Pound says 29-year-old Mandeep Bhatti was arrested at the scene after the argument and released before being charged with aggravated assault.

Bhatti was being held in custody when the manslaughter charge was laid.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound told Canadian Press a 32-year-old man sustained a head injury on May 2 and was transported to hospital by a relative.

Pound says a skull fracture required emergency surgery, and the patient was released from hospital a week later.

She says that on May 12, the victim was taken back to hospital with life-threatening bleeding in his brain and died on Sunday.

Bhatti will now be tried for manslaughter in the death of the other man, whose name has not been released.
