SURREY – Well known Indo-Canadian developer and Vancouver Sikh Youth slate leader Amarjit Singh Sandhu, who had projects reportedly worth over a $100 million currently, was gunned down in a shocking brazen daylight gang-style professional hit at Richmond’s Ironwood plaza last Saturday evening after he had spent the day doing charity work like feeding the homeless in downtown eastside and looking after the membership drive for the Ross Street Gurdwara’s upcoming elections.

So who murdered Sandhu?

He was not particularly a likeable figure due to his abrasive behaviour and a personality flaw but he was also charitable and was very active in the Ross Street temple politics where he had reportedly spent $250,000 of his own money to challenge the pesky Moderate slate, whom his group had accused of many irregularities and even financial impropriety.

So far there are no suspects but Homicide investigators have released a vague suspect description of the man who carried out the hit.

The suspect is described as a man in his early to mid-20s, approximately 6’0 with a slender build, and was wearing a light-coloured hooded sweatshirt or coat, and possibly a baseball hat. Investigators have not released more specific defining characteristics of the person responsible, including their race, hair or eye colour.

Sukh Deo, an alleged cocaine dealer from Vancouver who gained recent infamy for being kicked out of a Raptors playoff game, was also shot in a brazen daytime shooting in downtown Toronto. Deo had recently moved to Toronto to start a trucking company, but was involved with dealing drugs.

Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, two men wearing construction vests opened fire on Deo’s white Range Rover parked near Yonge and Eglington. Witnesses heard six shots fired and the vehicle’s front and rear windows on the driver’s side were shattered.

Deo could not be revived, and two black men – the suspected shooters – fled the area in a black car.

People at the temple registering to vote in the elections say that Sandhu was at the temple before he went to Richmond and was gunned down.

Sandhu was just steps from his truck when he was gunned down outside a busy plaza in Richmond around 6 p.m. Sunday. The 56-year-old was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

Dozens of people witnessed the shooting at Ironwood Plaza on Steveston Highway, which police say is why they’ve experienced many varying versions of events from people who were in the area when shots rang out, reported CTV News.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said many witnesses have come forward to provide information, and police is talking to business owners and additional witnesses.

“The [team] continues to move forward with evidence processing and managing the many witnesses who have come forward,” said a statement from IHIT.

Sandhu is the owner of Sandhill Developments, a residential and commercial construction company based in Richmond. In recent years, Sandhu built commercial plazas, several townhouse complexes and many single-family homes.

Sandhu’s team was preparing for the upcoming elections in September at the Ross Street Sikh Temple in Vancouver after a fierce fight for fair membership and voting rules. In a recent case, Sandhu took the Khalsa Diwan Society to court.

“He came, he was talking nice, you know,” said Joginder Singh Sunner also with the Khalsa Diwan Society. “Then all of the sudden we heard the news that he got shot. That’s terrible news. We have … sympathy for the family.”

Sandhu and his company were however named in more than 80 civil lawsuits in B.C. dating back to the 1990s.

But he was also a well-known philanthropist. Just hours before his murder, Sandhu was serving food to the homeless in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
