SURREY – A well known South Asian gangland figure was found dead in a Surrey park last weekend.

Brendan Aditya Chand, 27, of Surrey, was found dead in Whalley’s Bog Park at 130th Street and 98th Avenue on Sunday afternoon. He appears to have been shot, homicide investigators say.

Investigators say several people reported hearing gunshots in the area as early as 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.

This is Surrey’s fourth homicide this year. This would also be Surrey’s 43rd confirmed shooting so far this year although there have been others where police have not notified the public.

Staff Sergeant Jennifer Pound, spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said police received reports of gunshots being heard in the area of the park, at 9740 130th Street, at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

“IHIT has taken conduct of this investigation and the scene will be cordoned off for the duration of the day to continue with evidence collection and scene processing,” Pound said.

His killing over the weekend was likely targeted, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, which has taken conduct of the case.

It’s unclear just how long Chand’s body had been in the park, but several witnesses told police they heard gunshots in the area the previous night.

Court records indicate Brenden Aditya Chand was sentenced in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver to seven years in prison after pleading guilty in 2014 to shooting Abdul Aleem Khan in the shoulder, in Burnaby, in March 2011.

The sentencing judge, Justice T. Mark McEwan, noted the bullet remained in the victim’s body because doctors considered it too risky to remove it.

The shooting was captured on video, McEwan noted.

“Mr. Khan was shot in the back as he fled Mr. Chand up a stairway in the Royal Oak SkyTrain Station. There were many members of the public endangered by Mr. Chand’s actions.”

Chand was 22 at the time of the offence and had been serving a sentence in the community for trafficking in a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Anyone with information on the homicide is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-4448, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS to remain anonymous.
