The 70th Independence Day of India was celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour by the Indian diaspora and the friends of India on August 15 in Vancouver.

The Acting Consul-General of India, Mr. Amarjit Singh, unfurled the Indian flag at the Consulate. After the singing of the National Anthem, Mr Singh read out excerpts from the President’s address to the nation, and he also addressed the gathering, highlighting the Government of India’s achievements and newly-initiated schemes.

This was followed by the screening of documentaries.

Later, patriotic songs were sung by visiting Indian artistes Mr. Diljan and Ms. Sudesh Kumari.

Meanwhile, BC Premier Christy Clark issued the following statement in recognition of India’s Independence Day:

“August 15, 2016, marks the 69th anniversary of India’s independence.

India is the world’s largest democracy, and continues to make achievements in economic growth, cultural vibrancy and steady progress toward equality for all.

British Columbians of Indian heritage have made remarkable contributions to our province through business and community building, helping to build the inclusive and diverse society of which we are so proud.

As India celebrates its independence, we can also celebrate the strong and growing cultural and economic ties between British Columbia and India.

Happy Independence Day!”
