SURREY  – With so much violence in the world partly due to cultural misconceptions and intolerance the Global Peace Alliance Surrey Society (GPA) is hoping to create a dialogue of peace and understanding across cultural divides. GPA is beginning the process locally in Surrey with its first annual peace-themed multicultural variety show of global significance. There will also be nationally and internationally recognized keynote speakers throughout this event. It is held in the month of September to coincide with similar peace events around the globe on and about the International Day of Peace declared by the United Nations – September 21st. This is the first time ever such a peace- themed event of global significance is held in Surrey, British Columbia.

This first annual Surrey event will be further spiced with fun activities for both the young and old. These activities will include face-painting, acrostic peace-day poetry competition, and making origami peace doves. There will also be information tables from supporting organizations. This is a free event open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The sponsors of the event include the City of Surrey (Cultural Grants Program), Metro Vancouver (Cultural Grants Program), and the BC Government (Ministry of Multiculturalism).

Every year GPA joins other peace organizations around the world in celebrating the International Day of Peace, September 21st, declared by the United Nations. Marking this important day with a multicultural variety show of global significance brings home the point that we humans have the ability to celebrate the identifiable differences that exist among us and to appreciate our common values. This is also a clear testimony that it is possible to resolve inevitable conflicts that arise among us by truly listening to understand what others have to say in a peaceful manner – without resorting to any form of violence. This, in turn, will help change the present world of tension, fear, and uncertainty to one of relief, resilience and durable peace. Let’s celebrate the upcoming International Day of Peace with these kind and compassionate thoughts.
