Family Literacy Day Celebrations

Surrey Libraries is excited to honour Family Literacy Day with its annual celebration, Surrey Kids Read, taking place on Saturday, January 21st, 11 – 2 pm at Guildford Town Centre’s Centre Court.

Family Literacy Day is a national initiative involving annual events held on or around January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of families reading together and engaging in other literacy-related activities. This year’s theme is to learn at play, every day.

“Family Literacy builds strong brains and family bonds. Taking time to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well,” says Sara Grant, Manager of Youth Services at Surrey Libraries.  “We are proud to report that over the past year, Surrey Libraries welcomed an additional 17% more kids and teens at our library programs that support family learning. These include storytimes, book clubs, board games, LEGO clubs, Teen Library Councils, crafting as well as computer classes and Minecraft clubs and so much more.

Surrey Kids Read, a fun, free, family event will feature storytelling by Silly Susie and children’s performers Tony Prophet and the Purple Pirate. Families can drop by to enjoy face painting, button making and other crafts as well as entertainment. This event is sponsored by The Leader Newspaper and the Guildford Town Centre.
